Role playing has been around as a learning tool for a long time.
Without defining it as such, many of us use role play as a basic tool of life. Whenever we project into the future in a kind of 'what if' scenario we are indulging in a role play of some sort, we are projecting ourselves into an imaginary situation where, though we cannot control the outcome, we can anticipate some or all of the conditions and 'rehearse' our performance in order to influence the outcome.
Much of the time we are better for it. By way of example, you might wish to speak to your garage to raise the fact that they have still not cured the oil leak. Before doing so you might well rehearse to yourself what you intend to say. This would be a mini role play - we do it all the time because it helps.
In a learning environment role play can be a very flexible and effective tool. Role play is often used as a way of making sense of the theory, of gathering together concepts into a practical experience. And yet, it often goes wrong. Because like so many things which are simple on concept, it can become awfully complicated. If used badly in a training environment the role play tool can be ineffective and sometimes even damaging.
One of the main complicating factors surrounding role play is the attitude or emotional state of the people taking part. Quite frankly, many people are nervous, even terrified, at the prospect of participating in a role play; not surprising when you hear about some people's unfortunate role play experiences. For the purpose of this article, role play is defined as an experience around a specific situation which contains two or more different viewpoints or perspectives.
The situation is usually written as a prepared brief and the different perspectives on the same situation are handed out to the different people who will come together to discuss the situation. Each person will have a particular objective, or objectives they want to fulfil which may well be in conflict with their fellow role player or role players.
It is how each role player handles the situation that forms the basis of skills practice, assessment and development. The situations will be realistic and relevant to the role players and the most successful ones will be focused on developing a particular skill or skill set. If you consider a musical analogy, each 'player' is involved in the same 'symphony' but has a different score - their perspective and objective s - for their own 'instrument' - themselves as individuals - their histories.Sales role play scripts are an important tool to help you with improving sales.
Here are some key sections to include in your sales role play scripts. Gatekeeper Introduction It is very reasonable to expect almost half of phone prospecting calls to get answered by some sort of gatekeeper. A lot of gatekeepers will have the objective of trying to screen out salespeople so it can be very helpful to have that outline what you can say to a gatekeeper.
Target Prospect Introduction It is important to be prepared with what you will say to your target prospect when you introduce yourself. You have a few options here but one way that we recommend you go is to share some sort of value statement. Here is an example from one of our sales role play scripts.
Probing Sales Questions We believe that the best salesperson is the one that asks the best questions. With that, having sales role play scripts for good questions is extremely important. Here is an example of some of the questions that we ask:. Are your sales reps able to consistently generate leads and getting into new accounts? How concerned are you about the amount of time it takes to get new sales hires ramped up and performing? How confident are you that all of your sales resources are asking the right questions when talking with prospects?
Is getting under-performing sales resources corrected and on the right path important? Do you have a goal of decreasing sales staff turnover? Are you open to exploring new ways to boost sales performance? Do your sales resources use any kind of script or sales playbook? Having a good list of questions is a great step forward but role playing how to deal with the different answers that you can get from prospects is key to getting to the next level.
Anticipated Objections You are guaranteed to face objections when talking to prospects. Instead of trying to figure out to respond at the time that they come up, stop and take some time in advance to role play what you can say to either get around the objection or keep the conversation going. You will immediately improve your results if you use sales role play scripts for these objections and any others that you think will come up for the products that you sell.

Here are some very common objections that you can anticipate.Perhaps you needed to convince a prospective client to do business with your organization. Or maybe you had to present to executive board members, and you knew that they would be peppering you with questions about your proposal. Whatever the situation, chances are that you were nervous about the meeting; and practicing in front of a mirror may not have helped you overcome your anxiety, especially with respect to answering difficult questions.
This is where role-playing can be useful. In this article, we'll look at what it is, and we'll see how you and your team can use this technique to prepare for a variety of challenging and difficult situations.
Role-playing takes place between two or more people, who act out roles to explore a particular scenario. It's most useful to help you or your team prepare for unfamiliar or difficult situations. By acting scenarios like these out, you can explore how other people are likely to respond to different approaches; and you can get a feel for approaches that are likely to work, and for those that might be counter-productive.
You can also get a sense of what other people are likely to be thinking and feeling in the situation. Also, by preparing for a situation using role-play, you build up experience and self-confidence with handling the situation in real life, and you can develop quick and instinctively correct reactions to situations.
This means that you'll react effectively as situations evolve, rather than making mistakes or becoming overwhelmed by events. You can also use role-play to spark brainstorming sessions, to improve communication between team members, and to see problems or situations from different perspectives.
It is easy to set up and run a role-playing session. It will help to follow the five steps below.
To start the process, gather people together, introduce the problem, and encourage an open discussion to uncover all of the relevant issues. This will help people to start thinking about the problem before the role-play begins. Next, set up a scenario in enough detail for it to feel "real. Once you've set the scene, identify the various fictional characters involved in the scenario. Some of these may be people who have to deal with the situation when it actually happens for example, salespeople.
Others will represent people who are supportive or hostile, depending on the scenario for example, an angry client. Once you've identified these roles, allocate them to the people involved in your exercise; they should use their imagination to put themselves inside the minds of the people that they're representing.
This involves trying to understand their perspectives, goals, motivations, and feelings when they enter the situation. Each person can then assume their role, and act out the situation, trying different approaches where necessary. It can be useful if the scenarios build up in intensity. For instance, if the aim of your role-play is to practice a sales meeting, the person playing the role of the potential client could start as an ideal client, and, through a series of scenarios, could become increasingly hostile and difficult.
You could then test and practice different approaches for handling situations, so that you can give participants experience in handling them. When you finish the role-play, discuss what you've learned, so that you or the people involved can learn from the experience. You can learn another communication skills, like this, by joining the Mind Tools Club.
For example, if you're using it as part of a training exercise, you could lead a discussion on the scenarios you have explored, and ask for written summaries of observations and conclusions from everyone who was involved. Some people feel threatened or nervous when asked to role-play, because it involves acting. This can make them feel silly, or that they've been put on the spot.
To make role-playing less threatening, start with a demonstration. Hand two "actors" a prepared script, give them a few minutes to prepare, and have them act out the role-play in front of the rest of the group.
This approach is more likely to succeed if you choose two outgoing people, or if you're one of the actors in the demonstration.Role play is particularly useful for exploring how people respond differently to the same situation. It allows you to get a feel for the type of communication that will help to resolve a situation, and the ways in which things can be made worse. Role play also allows you to build both confidence and experience in how to handle different situations and issues that may arise in your day-to-day life and in your career.
You will be assigned one of the following scenarios by the course leader. In your pairs, you must plan and produce a role play based on the scenario, choosing to follow a path of either positive or negative communication to resolve the imagined situation. For example, if one of the scenarios were to involve a faulty product being returned to a shop, you could choose to resolve the situation positively by portraying a calm customer politely asking for and being granted a refund, or you could choose to portray an angry customer who does not want to listen to staff and escalates the situation to management.
A mixture of both verbal and non-verbal communication should also be included. You will have between 20 and 30 minutes to plan and prepare your role play, before performing it in front of the rest of the group and the course leader. After each pair has performed, the rest of the group will then evaluate the impact the positive or negative communication had on the situation presented in the role play.
The whole group will then discuss how the situation would have unfolded differently had the pair chosen the opposite method of communication. After briefly revising the changes that will take place, we moved on to a brainstorming session concerning after customer support improvements. Characters : Doctor, three patients, helper of doctor, mother, two volunteers having first aid training.

The teacher is striking the hand of a student with stick. The student expresses her hand joint pain to her class mates who applies a thin layer of ointment and wraps an elastic band age around the hand and when the afflicted feels swelling and severe pain she is brought to the doctor for proper treatment.
He uncovers the hand, wipes the hand with cotton, observes it keenly, applies a different ointment and wraps elastic bandage by putting some cotton on the hand.Customer Service Role Playing
He advises massage lotion after three days. A young girl comes back home suffering from sun stroke and has high fever. Her mother feels her pulses and puts a wet handkerchief on her forehead and after sometime takes her to the doctor. The doctor talks to the patients, checks the temperature with thermometer, give an injection, prepares three doses of medicine and give small envelope to the mother with instruction.
Both leave. A student falls, has a minor cut on the palm, her hand bleeds and is supported to stand by her class fellow. She brings her first aid box, put dean cloth on the wound to stop bleeding, applied antibiotic cream without rinsing the wound with clean water.
The wound of the girl is infected, has swelling and pus into it.
Role Play Scenarios
The reflects signs of pain. So she is brought to the doctor who examines the wound, uses hydrogenated liquid to remove the pus and does adhesive free dressing with paper tape.
Phase II: The teacher her has prepared some question cards to check the attention, interest and comprehension of the leaders. They are given a chance to express themselves in English. Both participants of the role play and the spectators are included in questions session. The learners are given the minutes to write the answers on the given worksheet. Then the teacher takes the first card and ask the question and the learners respond with the help of worksheet.
